A Nation Celebrates

The victory has sent waves of jubilation across Pakistan, reigniting hopes of a revival in the country’s once-dominant squash legacy. Pakistan, which produced legends like Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan, has seen a decline in international squash success in recent decades. Noor Zaman’s triumph is being hailed as a turning point, inspiring a new generation of players.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded Zaman’s achievement, stating, “Noor Zaman has made the entire nation proud with his determination and skill. His victory is a reminder that Pakistan has immense talent, and with the right support, we can reclaim our glory in squash.”

President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his congratulations, praising Zaman’s consistency and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

Government and Squash Federation Pledge Support

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who attended the final, called the event a landmark moment for Pakistan. “Hosting the inaugural U23 World Squash Championship in Karachi is a matter of great pride. Noor’s victory proves that Pakistan still has the potential to produce world-class champions,” he said.

Shah emphasized the need for continued investment in sports infrastructure and training programs, assuring that the government would work closely with the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF), Pakistan Air Force, and other stakeholders to nurture young talent.

Egypt Dominates Women’s Category

While Pakistan celebrated Noor Zaman’s triumph, Egypt’s Fairooz Aboulkheir secured the women’s title, defeating Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk in a straight-set victory (3-0). Aboulkheir received the same prize money as Zaman, while the runners-up in both categories were awarded $3,450 and silver medals.

A New Era for Pakistani Squash?

Noor Zaman’s victory has sparked discussions about the future of squash in Pakistan. With proper funding, training facilities, and international exposure, experts believe Pakistan can once again become a powerhouse in the sport. The PSF has announced plans to scout and train young talent, aiming for more international successes in the coming years.

As the nation celebrates this historic win, all eyes are now on Noor Zaman and his journey ahead. Will he follow in the footsteps of Pakistan’s squash greats? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—his U23 World Championship win has rekindled the flame of hope for Pakistani squash.
